I asked one of my coaching clients last week what was the biggest change for her so far this year. And she said the biggest thing that changed for her was that she stopped giving a rip about what everyone else thought. She stopped trying to impress everybody and she started to do things to impress herself.
I thought what an interesting concept. Who are you trying to impress? What decisions did you make today and did you make those decisions intentionally because you are trying to impress yourself or did you make them because you are trying to impress somebody else? Think about it… Would you be impressed with the meal you ate today? Would you be impressed with what you spent your money on last week? Are you trying to impress you or are you trying to impress people around you?
One of the greatest prisons you can live in is the prison that confines you by what other people think. The truth of the matter is our people dying from suicide in this country because they compare themselves to everybody else. A friend of mine once said: “ My brother committed suicide because he couldn’t stop comparing himself to everybody else”. I’ll tell you what. When you are living a life and you’re trying to compare yourself to everybody else, you are trying to impress everybody else it is a life of unhappiness.
So my question for you today is “Who are you trying to impress? ”… and the reality is people don’t care as much as you think they do. Here is the truth…People are going to judge you no matter what. They will judge you if you go right or if you go left, whatever it is, they will judge you. The unhappiest people on this planet are people that spend their lives trying to impress other people, that ultimately don’t give a rip. Do you realize most people will decide to go to your graveside based on the weather? Are you with me?
I want you to ask this question yourself every single day “Are the decisions I am making would impress me a year from now? Will the future me be impressed with the decisions I am making now?” And you’ve got to start living a life trying to impress YOU. And I guarantee you by doing that you’ll probably make a bigger impact. And you will probably inspire people to live their own life instead of impressing them.
Start getting impressed with what you choose, start getting impressed with the meal you ate, start getting impressed with saying no to things that you know you should say no to. Start being impressed with following your schedule or your new habits. Stop trying to impress others! It is the fastest way to lose your momentum and steal your happiness. Make the decision to IMPRESS YOU. Do things that will impress you and then your future self will be thrilled with. Be Your Own Hero!
You’ve got to ask bigger and better questions and get intentional not to get lost in this disease of comparasment in this disease of trying to live up and run everybody’s else race. You should run your own freaking race. You started in different places, you have different goals you are headed to different places. Run your own race. Doesn’t benefit anyone not to..
